Tanfield Railway Station
Tanfield Railway runs through both Gateshead and Durham and runs preserved industrial steam railway trains and locomotives. Every Sunday it also runs a passenger train service on a three-mile trip between Durham and Sunniside in Gateshead. It is claimed that Tanfield Railway is the worlds oldest railway
The colliery railway dates back to 1720 to deliver coal from the inland collieries of Durham down to the Staiths on the River Tyne. The journey of the coal continued on towards South Shields where it was usually sea bound to the South East of the country. Amazingly, this route was in constant use from 1725 until it closed in 1964.
Because of the long heritage of coal mining and steam locomotive engineering in the North East, the Railway station and lines have been part of a preservation effort for the area. This started in Marley Hill and has continued on to this very day.
The railway has many events over the year and does a fantastic Polar Express experience for the kids at Christmas time. You can find out more about the events at their website https://www.tanfield-railway.co.uk/
If you would like to do something that is a bit more modern and in a more modern environment, you could try some retail therapy at the Metro Center.
If you are in the Sunniside area and need your Annual Boiler Service completed then please feel free to get in touch with us.
